Characterizing and understanding free-floating planetary-mass objects
Free-floating, or "rogue", planetary-mass objects have been discovered wandering through the Galaxy unbound to any star. The origins of these objects remain poorly understood, and likely involve a combination of many different processes relevant to star and planet formation.
Direct imaging surveys of young star-forming regions continue to find hundreds of high-mass rogue planets, though it remains an ongoing theoretical challenge to determine what fraction represent ejected planets as opposed to aborted stellar embryos. Meanwhile, upcoming space-based microlensing programs, such as the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, are poised to vastly increase our sample of free-floating planets at masses extending to Earth-mass and below, opening a new window into their origin and demographics.
Following the success of previous workshops, Rogue Worlds 3 is a 4-day workshop designed to bring together researchers at the forefront of different aspects of the study of free-floating planets. Key focal areas include:

The conference will take place in the Phillips Auditorium at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Phillips Auditorium is located in Building D of the historic 60 Garden Street observatory complex.
Travel: Cambridge, MA is conveniently connected to the major transportation infrastructure in Boston, MA.
Airport: Boston Logan International Airport is a 20 minute taxi/rideshare to the Center for Astrophysics, or take the free bus to South Station, and then connect to the Red Line (towards Alewife) and exit at Harvard Square.
Train: South Station is also a major hub for train travel with convenient routes along the Eastern Seaboard of the USA through Amtrak.
Transit: The Center for Astrophysics is accessible via a 15-minute walk from the Harvard Square MBTA station (Red Line). Frequent local bus routes (MBTA 74, 75, and 78) also connect Harvard Square Station with the Center for Astrophysics (take the stop at Concord Ave opppsote Buckingham St).
